When plumbing suddenly goes wrong, people on benefits have more reason than most to begin to worry. The cost of such work can run into the thousands and for those living on the breadline there begs the question: ‘How will I pay?’
That was indeed the case for 43 year-old mother of three, Razia Akhtar from Halifax who receives Child Tax Credit benefit and had, until last December, been without hot water for 6 months. Concerned by how she could afford any repair work, Home Schools Liaison Officer, Razia chose to continue living with the problem.
Then, in a chance conversation with her friend the topic of the Warm Front Scheme cropped up and Razia was encouraged by what she had heard.
“I had been on Child Tax Credit benefit for some time so my friend informed me that this might qualify me for a Warm Front Grant. I had no idea there was such a scheme, but after some research I found that Gavin Ward may be able to help me,” said Razia.
After completing the telephone assessment with one of Gavin Ward’s specially trained staff, she was told that her benefits entitled her to a £3,500 grant. She was then informed by a Warm Front Inspector that she would need a brand new energy efficient combi-boiler and a full system powerflush to remove sediment from pipes and radiators.
A short time later, a Gavin Ward gas engineer visited the house and within a day the work was completed. “Before starting the job the man from Gavin Ward explained absolutely everything. He was very well mannered,” said Razia. “By the end of the day, the house was so tidy - I didn’t even realise the work had been done.”
Despite working quickly, the engineer was fully respectful of the Akhtar’s home. “I’d just had new carpets put down but he covered them with sheets and took all his mess with him. Overall, I found the service from Gavin Ward and Warm Front excellent.” she added.
